So Lego is putting out a line that is being marketed (more or less) specifically to girls. At first I was pretty upset. I read the article announcing it and it seems like they have good good intentions and have done some good research.
Lego doesn’t usually disappoint me with their marketing decisions. They’re a smart company that has been around forever. The beauty of Lego sets, is that for the most part they weren’t gender specific. There of course were themes like, Harry Potter, Prince of Persia and Indiana Jones that are more movie driven. I feel those can be excluded.
On the whole though, their sets like City, and Space, and Pirates are great because they’re general ideas, not specifically marketed to boys or girls.
When I was looking at the sets for the second time (with less rage), and after talking to co-workers with little girls, I came to think that girls would actually want to play with these. Some of them are a little lame (doll house) but the science lab seemed pretty cool.
This will be a Lego set to watch and see what comes up from it.
I have to agree with Mattt here. Space, pirates, and Harry Potter are all things that girls enjoy just as much as boys do. Personally, I fucking love space. I think it’s ballin’. I don’t think that Lego needs to colour things pink and make the women look nothing like Lego figures to get girls to play with them. I’m a girl as far as I know, and I’d love to play with regular Legos. They weren’t gendered at all from what I understood about them when I was younger, so by adding “female” Legos, it’s like saying the old ones were “male.” Lame.
